The tide pools at Dana Point consist of a vast stretch of large boulders and rocks that extend for several hundred yards. This area sits at the foot of huge cliffs that overlook the ocean. The tide pool area starts just north of the small beach behind the Ocean Institute in Dana Harbor. The boulders provide small pools of seawater that are trapped as the water recedes during low tide. These small pools provide a habitat for a variety of sea life including anemones, crabs, snails, fish, mussels, barnacles and a variety of algae.
Low tide is at 2:20 pm, when the greatest animal life is visible. We will spend a couple hours visiting the tide pools and the marina, staying to catch the sunset at 6:42. After taking photos, if folks are interested, we can stop at the Shwack Beach Grill for a casual dinner.
Bring comfortable shoes (the rocks are slippery and rough), water, sunscreen and your tripod.
As always, I recommend carpooling, for economy, camaraderie and the environment. LA CARPOOLING: Meet at the Culver City Expo Line parking lot, at Washington & National Blvds. We will organize vehicles and leave by 1:00 in order to arrive at the beach by 2:00 (approximately 1 hour - 65 miles)
OC CARPOOLING: Meet at the Fullerton park-n-ride at the intersection of the 5 and the 91 in Fullerton. From either freeway, exit Magnolia (north), take a left at Orangethorpe. The group will need to coordinate the cars when they get to the PNR, meet under the number 2 (affixed to the light poles). Leave by 1:20 in order to arrive at the beach by 2:00 (approximately 40 minutes – 40 miles).
For folks not carpooling, our ultimate destination is the Ocean Institute, 24200 Dana Point Harbor Drive, Dana Point, CA 92629. Follow Dana Point Harbor drive north all the way until it ends. Parking is available in several parking lots near this area. We will all meet at the parking lot.
